On May 23, Venus and the moon was a beautiful sight as they came close and set together. I took this photo as they were setting; the slender crescent moon was beautiful. In this photograph you can see the darker side of the moon as well. This effect is called earthshine, and it happens when light reflects off the earth, hits the moon, and is reflected back to earth for us to see. Be sure watch Venus as it sinks lower and lower into the sky, leading up to June’s transit. Also, the moon makes a fascinating study as it climbs higher after last week’s eclipse and waxes from slender crescent to almost first quarter.
